When: Thurs., January 10, 2019
Time: 10:00AM - 1:00PM (Including Lunch)

In this seminar we will be looking at characterizing PDN pollution, spectral analysis, time-domain vs frequency domain and their relationship tracking down PDN noise. Knowing what to look for and how to minimize these problems will give you more accurate measurements. Furthermore, we will tackle typical challenges that you are faced with when working with Power Rails, such as noise, RF pickup & probing.

Agenda:
1. Characterizing PDN Pollution:
  • Reminder: what is power integrity?
  • Why spectral analysis?
    • What specific power integrity problems benefit from this approach?
  • Time-domain vs frequency-domain analysis
    • Time-domain figures of merit
    • Basics of the Fourier transform
    • Relationships between time-domain and frequency-domain characteristics
    • FFT settings and their effects
    • Interpreting the spectrum’s vertical scale
  • Examples
    • Simple sine-wave generator
    • Tracking down PDN noise
2. Challenges Measuring Power Rails:
  • Reminder: what is power integrity?
    • Causes of power distribution network noise
  • Considerations when probing power rails
  • How to minimize RF pickup
    • Shielding
    • Ground loop inductance
  • Choosing a probe for power integrity measurements
    • Passive probes, direct connections, coaxial probes and voltage rail probes
    • Effects of probing on measurement noise, reflections, loading, and other factors
