Nowadays, TDRs are used for very accurate instantaneous impedance measurements. In the past they were only used as a fault detector.
One of the factors that has made the difference is calibration, but, even nowadays, not all TDRs can be calibrated. Teledyne LeCroy TDRs are calibrated. In the case of the WavePulser 40Ix, the calibration is built-in and automatic.
