How Do I Make 3-phase Power Measurements with an Oscilloscope?

Instantaneous real power (in Watts) is simply voltage multiplied by current. But what if you want to calculate the average real power during one operational power cycle? How would apparent power (Volt-Amperes or VA), reactive power (Volt-Amperes reactive, or VAr), and other power quantities (power factor, phase angle, etc.) be calculated and how is this done in a three-phase system?
In this coffee break webinar we will provide the mathematical explanation of the power calculations used in power analyzers and oscilloscopes and how both instruments identify a power cycle during which to calculate values.

Topics to be covered in this webinar:

  • What is 3-phase power and understanding 3-phase power
  • What is line to line voltage? What is line to neutral voltage?
  • Single and three-phase power calculation algorithms
  • Identifying and using a power cycle
  • Two wattmeter method for calculating 3-phase power
