Techniques for EMC / EMI / ESD Testing Using Oscilloscopes
This presentation overviews how oscilloscopes are used for advanced and accurate methods for performing EMC testing, including ESD pulse verification, determining energy of the loaded pulse, voltage referenced below battery, EFT burst analysis, and surge testing. Note that the use of oscilloscopes is for EMC testing is primarily to calibrate the ESD gun, to verify that the surge generator and EFT generator are outputting the correct waveform shapes, as well as to verify the output of sensors during radiated immunity testing.
Topics include:
- EMC measurement requirements for ESD pulse analysis
- Sequenced acquisition techniques for EFT (Electrical Fast Transient) burst analysis
- Use of parameter limiters to filter EMC pulse statistics
- Surge testing methodologies
- Voltage measurements below battery level
- ISO 10605:2001 RC time constant verification
- Sample rate recommendations for accurate EMC testing
- ISO 10605:2008 statistical data collection
- Dropout and interrupt testing procedures
- Radiated immunity testing using oscilloscopes
